The purpose of the meeting between LIFE REEF nature protection experts and the manager of Roja and Engure ports was to discuss the impact of port operations on biodiversity and the Natura 2000 area, as well as to discuss the process of developing a nature protection plan.

Roja is a small and cozy town on the western shore of the Gulf of Riga, which has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. Historically, the port of Rojas is the largest fishing port on the Gulf of Riga. There are 50 parking spaces available in the yacht harbor, as well as a sanitary complex with WC, showers and laundry. Children and youth sailing sports school provides an opportunity to learn sailing skills. The stages of the Livonia Cup of the Latvian Open Sea Sailing Championship are held regularly. Wood products of local origin are mostly handled in the port: pulp wood, fuel wood, fuel wood chips and a small amount of gravel.

Engures port is the only one of the small ports on the Gulf of Riga that offers refueling facilities for yachts and cutters. This service has significantly increased the port's clientele. For example, for cutters from Jūrmala, refueling in the port of Enguri is crucial in order to visit Enguri, enjoy local entertainment options and return to Jūrmala. The refueling facilities have also attracted visitors from Riga and even Lithuania.

During the meeting, the need to find a balance between port development and nature protection was emphasized. Future challenges for both involved parties are to ensure the economic potential of ports while protecting the natural values of the Baltic Sea. The cooperation of LIFE REEF nature protection experts with the manager of the ports of Rojas and Engures is a positive step towards the sustainable development of ports and the preservation of the Baltic Sea ecosystem.
