Within the framework of the LIFE REEF project, the mapping and research of specially protected marine habitats of European Union importance is carried out in the Baltic Sea area. Scientific research of the LIFE REEF project is necessary to ensure the protection of habitats, which will contribute to the improvement of fish populations and bird habitats, as well as the creation of a comprehensive protection system of marine resources. During the project, it is planned to provide proposals for the creation and inclusion of new protected marine areas in the Natura 2000 network, as well as to develop a scientifically based coastal fishing management plan, providing proposals for reducing bycatch of seabirds and mammals. Also, the LIFE REEF project envisages the development of a unified management plan for all existing and newly created marine protected areas, also evaluating the possibilities of marine habitat ecosystem services.
